Getting ahead of pandemic risk
Insights from 8 years of global monitoring
Overview
As the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB) concludes its mandate in 2026, this report draws on eight years of independent monitoring to reflect on progress, persistent gaps and lessons for strengthening global pandemic preparedness.
The report presents five key insights from the GPMB’s experience, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive understanding of pandemic risk, stronger political leadership and accountability, sustained investment in preparedness, and more effective translation of warnings into action.
Looking ahead, it makes the case for a new approach to global, comprehensive monitoring that can identify emerging risks, inform decision-making and drive sustained action before the next pandemic strikes.
